Supporting advocacy for policy change through enhanced understanding of news coverage of the social determinants of health
In counties throughout California, community leaders are advocating for structural and policy changes to advance racial and health equity. To strengthen their ability to do so, BMSG helped build their awareness of how news coverage advances or hinders efforts to improve the social and environmental conditions that influence health.
With support from The California Endowment, we met with community leaders to learn what key factors are most relevant to our media research, analyzed how health equity appears in the news, and developed strategic communication materials; we delivered trainings and gathered and shared lessons learned from other TCE efforts to advance policy and narrative-change in California.
