Building capacity to make the case for healthier beverage environments

The overall goal of this project was to increase public health advocates’ capacity to influence public debate and public policy on a critical aspect of the food and fitness environment: the beverage environment. To shift the beverage environment in their communities and statewide, advocates must be skilled at communicating on the issue. They must be able to frame sugar-sweetened beverages from a public health perspective and counter opposition forces that resist any policies that might reduce consumption.

BMSG worked with the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and others in California to help advocates around the state build their capacity to make the case for healthier beverage environments. BMSG provided technical assistance and helped prepare content for kickthecan.info, a comprehensive site to help advocates create healthier beverage environments.
